The Mac Mini M4 (base variant) is Apple’s latest addition to its compact desktop lineup, boasting the new M4 chip, improved energy efficiency, and a minimalist design ideal for modern workspaces. While Apple markets it as a budget-friendly powerhouse, many creators, especially video editors, wonder if it’s suitable for video editing tasks, specifically light video editing such as 1080p projects, YouTube content, or basic timeline work.

This article will break down the technical specs of the Mac Mini M4 base model, assess real-world video editing performance, and help you decide whether this machine fits your editing workflow. If you’re a content creator, student, freelance editor, or hobbyist, read on to find out if this device is worth the investment.

Mac Mini M4 Base Model: Key Specifications

Before we jump into editing performance, let’s take a look at the specs offered in the base variant:

Apple M4 chip: 8-core CPU (4 performance + 4 efficiency cores)

10-core GPU integrated with the chip

16GB Unified Memory (RAM)

256GB SSD Storage

macOS Sonoma (or later)

2 Thunderbolt 4 ports, 2 USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet, and headphone jack

The M4 chip is Apple’s latest custom silicon offering significant gains in performance and power efficiency. With a balanced CPU and GPU combo and 16GB unified memory, this compact machine is positioned as a high-performing entry-level Mac.

Understanding Light Video Editing Workloads

Light video editing refers to tasks that don’t require professional-grade hardware but still demand decent performance. Typical light editing scenarios include:

Editing 1080p video footage (or lower)

Creating content for YouTube, Instagram Reels, and TikTok

Trimming clips, adding text overlays, basic transitions

Color correction (light grading)

Exporting videos in H.264 or HEVC formats

Occasional 4K footage editing (with optimized proxies)

This type of editing is less GPU-intensive compared to professional workloads like 6K or RAW video, multicam 4K timelines, or heavy VFX rendering. The Mac Mini M4 base variant is built with exactly this kind of user in mind.

Real-World Performance: How Does the Mac Mini M4 Hold Up?

When testing real-world editing tasks, especially in Apple-optimized apps like Final Cut Pro, the Mac Mini M4 performs exceptionally well.

1. Smooth Timeline Playback

Editing a 1080p video timeline with cuts, transitions, and light color grading in Final Cut Pro is seamless. Playback remains fluid, and there’s minimal lag when scrubbing through footage. Even in Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, the M4 chip holds its ground well for basic edits.

For creators editing reels or short-form video content, this is more than sufficient.

2. Faster Rendering with Optimized Codecs

The M4 chip is built on a 3nm architecture and includes hardware encoders/decoders for popular video formats like H.264, HEVC, and ProRes. This results in faster render and export times. A five-minute 1080p H.264 video can be exported in under a minute using Final Cut Pro, impressive for a base model machine.

3. Minimal Heat and Noise

One of the standout features of the Mac Mini series is silent operation. Even under moderate load, fan noise is barely noticeable. For video editors who work long hours, this adds a layer of comfort and professionalism to their workspace.

4. Multitasking Capabilities

With 16GB of unified memory, the Mac Mini M4 can handle running Final Cut Pro alongside browser tabs, Photoshop, and other light tools without noticeable slowdowns. For video editors working with scripts, music, and internet tools simultaneously, this ensures a smooth multitasking experience.

Editing Software Compatibility

Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro is tailor-made for Apple Silicon and runs flawlessly on the M4 chip. It takes full advantage of the GPU and unified memory, delivering performance that rivals even some higher-end systems in optimized workflows.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro runs well, especially when using hardware-accelerated settings and optimized media. While it’s not as smooth as Final Cut Pro, it’s more than usable for editing short clips, vlogs, and lightweight content.

DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve works surprisingly well on the M4 base variant. For 1080p timelines, basic color correction, and light grading, performance remains strong. However, heavy Fusion effects or RAW 4K files might push the limits of this machine.

Limitations of the Mac Mini M4 Base Variant

While the M4 Mac Mini is excellent for light editing, it’s important to understand where the base model might fall short:

1. Limited Storage

The 256GB SSD fills up quickly when working with video footage. Just a few 1080p projects or high-bitrate clips can eat up space. An external SSD is almost a must-have for anyone editing even casually.

2. Non-Upgradable RAM and Storage

As with other Apple Silicon Macs, you cannot upgrade RAM or internal storage after purchase. This makes it essential to choose the right configuration upfront, or plan for external storage and cloud backups.

3. Not Ideal for Heavy 4K or Multicam Workflows

Although occasional 4K editing is possible, consistent editing of 4K RAW footage, multicam timelines, or VFX-heavy projects may require more GPU power and RAM. Editors working on complex YouTube documentaries or commercial projects might feel bottlenecked.

4. Limited External Display Support

The base M4 Mac Mini supports one external display via Thunderbolt and one via HDMI. If your workflow involves a dual-monitor editing setup with color calibration and scopes, be sure to plan your peripherals accordingly.

External SSD and Accessory Recommendations

To unlock the full potential of the Mac Mini M4, pairing it with the right accessories is essential:

External SSD: Look for Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB 3.2 Gen 2 drives. The Samsung T7 and SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD are solid options.

Monitor: A good 4K or QHD monitor with accurate color reproduction will make editing easier and more precise.

Keyboard and Mouse: Wireless peripherals keep the setup clean. Apple’s Magic Keyboard or Logitech’s MX Keys are good choices.

Audio Interface: For editors working with sound, a basic DAC or USB audio interface can drastically improve output quality.

A hobbyist editing travel footage or home videos

A business producing product demos, tutorials, or promotional clips

For all these use cases, the Mac Mini M4 delivers snappy performance, excellent value, and the reliability of Apple’s ecosystem.

Final Thoughts: Is the Mac Mini M4 Base Variant Worth It?

In 2025, light video editing doesn’t require a bulky workstation. The Mac Mini M4 (base variant) proves that modern silicon, even in a compact form, can handle demanding tasks when optimized right. Its 16GB of unified memory, efficient GPU, and excellent performance in real-world editing apps make it a top contender for creators on a budget.

Of course, if you regularly work with 4K, RAW formats, or advanced visual effects, investing in a higher-tier Mac or external upgrades may be wise. But for the majority of users working with 1080p content, social media clips, or basic storytelling, this machine is more than enough.

In short, the Mac Mini M4 base variant is not just good for light video editing, it’s one of the best value options available in Apple’s current lineup.

The final endorsement has been given by a US federal court to Apple’s class-action settlement worth $50 million, an agreement reached in July 2020. This settlement rectifies accusations of Apple obscuring the unpredictable performance of keyboards on MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models launched between 2015 and 2019.

In a ruling given on Thursday, Judge Edward Davila acknowledged the settlement addressing Apple’s controversial “butterfly” keyboards as “fair, adequate, and reasonable.”

As part of this resolution, MacBook users who suffered due to these keyboards are set to receive compensation varying from $50 to $395. In his statement, Judge Davila pointed out that in excess of 86,000 payment claims were lodged by the class action members before the March deadline.

Apple first introduced the butterfly keyboard in the 12-inch MacBook in 2015. Jony Ive, the then chief designer, contended that this design would empower the company to produce sleeker laptops without compromising on stability or typing experience. Yet, as the butterfly keyboard became a standard feature in more Apple’s laptops, users found it susceptible to dust and debris.

MacBook models manufactured between 2015 and 2019 came equipped with the butterfly keyboard, which tended to fail under regular use. Accumulation of dust, dirt, or even crumbs could render keys stuck or non-functional, prompting a lawsuit.

To enhance durability, Apple made several modifications but eventually switched back to the traditional “scissor switch” design, evident in the 16-inch MacBook Pro released at the end of 2019.

The settlement agreement does not necessitate Apple admitting any fault. An appeal from members of the class action seeking a proposed payment of $125 for a specific group was dismissed. The judge also turned down the demand for recompense from MacBook users who experienced keyboard-related issues but did not avail of Apple’s repair services. The timing for the payment to claimants remains uncertain, yet lawyers engaged in the case are keen to disburse the funds to their clients.

Upgrading options for Mac Pros are now available for MacBooks in various upgrading kits in 1 Terabytes, 2 Terabytes, 4 Terabytes and 8 Terabytes options. This corresponds to the price range of $600 to $2800 in the USA.

Each of the upgrading kits are equipped with 2 SSD options with an internal storage capacity. This will allow us to upgrade the storage spaces of MacBook on our own or at least with minimal assistance. Until today, each person with a MacBook has to reach Apple stores near them, a genius bar or any of the Apple authorized service providers. Well, this does not work when the nearest centeris not available with the accessories needed. And the loss of warranty of the MacBook has to be considered too.

The drives are very much self-installable. The problem until now was the T2 chip; the person who is authorized with the T2 chip was only able to upgrade the hard disk. The speeds of the upgrading kit would be identical to the previous solid-state drive that comes inbuilt with the system. And if one is using older drives, then it could simply upgrade the reading and writing speeds (which are already on a faster side in MacBook’s). We’ll all of us would agree that the price is on the higher side, but that’s actually a trade-off we need to do to experience the premium quality of Apple products with exceptional customer support.

The tech giant Apple has launched the all-new iPhone and Apple watch new compatibility features and has named it “iPhone + Apple Watch”. This campaign is aimed to reinforce the benefits one will get when both the devices are integrated together.

The campaign is live on Apple’s Homepage and it showcases different features that will be unlocked once both the devices are synced. It goes something like this-

“Get directions on iPhone and tap on your wrist when you need to turn. Check your heart rate on Apple Watch and track it over the last hour, day, month, or year on iPhone. When you put the two of them together, they add up to so much more.”

Apple has always focused on showcasing the hands-off ability that this integration provides to its users and it is pretty evident by the looks of the homepage of Apple. Abilities such as heart rate tracking, answering calls, playing songs, and tracking health-related data and analysis of all this can be done after syncing both the smart device where iPhone is the brains behind all the processes mainly.

Here are some of the examples of the feature that can be unlocked after syncing your Apple watch with your iPhone-

If you don’t have your iPhone near you, with just a glance over your watch, you could know who’s calling and can either answer or ignore it.

You can shift the call on your watch to your phone just by tapping on it and it can even be changed into FaceTime.

One can just raise their watch and see who’s texting them and that’s not it; a reply can also be sent through watches. Quick fun replies were never this easy.

If your hands are full, no worries just ask Siri to reply to the text on your watch.

iPhones are famous for their amazing photo capturing ability. With Apple Watch, you can set a shot and then capture it through tapping on your watch.

The photos taken can be set as an Apple watch’s face.

With the help of Apple’s Music library, it’s now very easy to access music and control the playlist through your watch.

It’s not just music that can be listened to; you can also listen to podcasts and audiobooks with the help of your watch and iPhone.

Health stats like heart rate can be tracked all the time through your watch, and then can be analyzed by the app on your iPhone. If our heart rate suddenly spikes or is too low, a notification will be shown.

These are some of the features; however, there are a lot of features that Apple has incorporated into this campaign. And we can expect a lot of new features to come up in the near future.

An app bug is causing some iOS users to be unable to access their apps, with iPhone and iPad users affected receiving the message “This app is no longer shared with you” while attempting to open an app. There are several reports about this in MacRumours forums and on Twitter with one MacRumors user describing the issue as:

“Is anyone else experiencing widespread app crashes? I am suddenly being informed that “this app is no longer shared with you” from several iOS apps. When I follow the prompt to the app’s App Store page, the only option is to “open,” which then just puts me back into the same loop.

All those complaints suggest that people running iOS 13.4.1 and iOS 13.5 were affected by the issues. While it’s unclear what causes the problem, not everyone running these iOS versions has been changed. Any users were only affected while they were upgrading apps.

Apps dealing with this issue include YouTube, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, LastPass, etc. MacRumors updated their iPhone WhatsApp running the iOS 13.5 and saw the error message.

It seems there’s no solution or fix for this right now, or whether it’s a cloud / server-side problem, or if it’s a bug built into iOS 13.5, which would require patching.

People affected by the problems have been able to fix issues by removing and reinstalling the app that displays the error. Offloading the app could also work instead of deleting it.

With new technologies and a plan for developers, the transition for Apple to turn the MacOS hardware away from Intel to ARM processors is set to accelerate at WWDC later this month. Having developers switch over is essential, but with regards to next year’s ARM-powered MacBook and MacBook Pro computers, that is a bigger question.

How do radical ARM-powered laptops attract consumers? You need to look at the current leaks for this and think about why people are buying new laptops.

For almost a decade, the MacBook concept was preserved in amber. Although the notebooks have all gotten thinner and lighter, the lack of design and feature updates is evident. The only noticeable change was the removal of the physical function keys and their substitution by the touch bar.

It promised a lot, including a second display on your laptop and the first touch-sensitive monitor available under MacOS, which was released in 2016. Yet the promise has never been delivered on, either by third-party developers or by Apple itself, and others see it as a gimmick.

The latest upgrades to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro saw a lukewarm response to the hardware and softwareexcept for the keyboard. Replacing the awkward and unreliable butterfly keyboard with a scissor-switched ‘Magic’ keyboard attracted massive sums of support and optimism for the laptops for 2020. But that’s a card Apple can only play once, and now it has been burned.

One of the unique challenges of selling an ARM-powered MacBook is you can’t focus on ‘it’s using an ARM processor’ to market it beyond the highly involved geekerati. With a switch to ARM, Apple’s goal is to make the transition as invisible as possible.

Intel’s switch to ARM is a bold move for developers and the geekerati. Across more concrete ways, the general population can see radical changes. Apple has a chance to significantly redefine its laptop experience for everyone, and to move it out for the next decade.

If this new MacBook Pro from Apple gets released in the market, it’s sure to sell like hotcakes, especially on ecommerce portals that don’t charge any shipping fee or GST for courier services.

Apple has been in the news for a long time now for its upgrades or leaks and the company is again seemed to roll out a new feature to its smartphones, which will now include a ProMotion display with a higher refresh rate for iPhone 12 Pro series. The feature was earlier seen on the Samsung Galaxy S20 series and One Plus 8 Pro.

It will be right to say that amid the lockdown situation the company is maintaining its pace with other tech organizations. The iPhone 12 Pro 6.7-inch flagship design is pretty much exactly the way users were expecting it to be. Further, users will also get to experience some improvements in the face id and a better version of the camera.

These updates will be integrated into the iPhone 12 series by extending it to 3 tiers with iPhone 12, iPhone Pro, and iPhone Max. Talking about its design, it is pretty much similar to iPad Pro with a futuristic look with thinner bezels, which makes it much larger now with a 6.7-inch display. Well, the company is still working on its design, so the users can experience a few changes once the design and launch are finally out.

Generally, the refresh rate of the iPhone devices was settled to 60 Hz, but with the increasing competition and in order to upgrade to a better version, the new iPhone 12 Pro series will be available with 120 Hz refresh rate, which was seen only in Samsung’s and One Plus’ latest series. With other companies upgrading their devices to better versions, we don’t see Apple lagging behind in providing the best to its millions of users. The improvement was made for a user-friendly and faster experience to shift between the web pages and to provide fast movement while scrolling through the apps.

According to the reports, the improvement to face id feature is to unlock the phone from multiple angles by providing a wider viewing angle. Talking about the improvement in the square camera, which will be 5mm larger in width and length. The company will also be seen testing the light sensor on the bottom right of the camera to improve the appearance of the iPhone 12 Pro. The improvement will involve an advanced version of autofocus and better stabilization with the addition of LIDAR technology.

These are just reports and confirmation is still awaited from the company on whether they are going to name these phones as iPhone 12, 12 Pro, or 12 Max. Users will have to wait for quite a while for their release.

For months, we have been witnessing rumors about iPhone 12, but now for the first time, information about iPhone 12 Pro has come into the light. If the report turns out to be accurate, then for sure, iPhone 12 Pro will be Apple’s most powerful smartphone after iPhone 12 Pro Max, of course.

As Apple launched iPhone SE amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, we are pretty much sure that iPhone 12 series will surely be started by the end of 2020. Now let us take a look at the details about iPhone 12 Pro, which surfaced online recently.

iPhone 12 Pro: New features

While Android smartphone makers have already been competing for higher refresh rates, Apple too has now jumped into the race. A report stated that iPhone 12 Pro will sport a ProMotion Display and will have a 120 Hz refresh rate. It is also reported that there will be an improvement in FaceID features, and the cameras will receive significant upgrades too.

FaceID will now support wider angles, and it will make it easier for iPhone users to unlock the phones while they are busy doing other stuff. iPhone 12 Pro will have a 6.1 inch-screen while Pro Max is slated to have a 6.7-inch display. About the 120Hz refresh rate, this improvement will massively improve gaming performance, smoother scrolling, and lead to better multitasking.

The camera will receive significant upgrades too; Apple in this series will mainly focus on low light photography. The camera will have enhanced LIDAR, which means better image stabilization and autofocus. It will also sport the telephoto lens for improved magnification. As per the reports, the engineers are not satisfied with the 64 MP Camera, so iPhone 12 might have a 12MP camera. Apple has focused its efforts towards better slow-motion videos, and the upcoming series will show the same too. Also, as the world gets ready for the next wave of technology and higher data transfer speeds, all the variants of the iPhone 12 will be 5G-ready.

Apple has finally made some fantastic changes, and if the reports are accurate, then the iPhone 12 Pro will surely be the most exciting phone to release in 2020. However, the release of the phone might just get delayed owing to the globally spread coronavirus.
